| Here you will find the highest mountains of the Fichtelgebirge. With 1.053m "Schneeberg" is the highest mountain not only of the Fichtelgebirge but also of the whole of Franconia. For a long time the summit of the mountain "Schneeberg" was not accessible to hikers since it was prohibited area of the military. The buildings erected for this purpose still testify to that time. From "Backöfele", the scenic rock of the mountain "Schneeberg", you have a lovely view as far as Thuringia and Saxony. | ![]() |

| East of the mountain "Schneeberg" lies the mountain "Nußhardt" (972m) with its bizarre rock peaks, the mountain "Seehügel" with the FGV (Fichtelgebirge association) accommodation hut "Seehaus" and the mountain "Platte" (885m) with its sea of rocks. Northwards lies the mountain "Rudolfstein" (866m) with its natural rock towers. | |

Southwest of the mountain
"Schneeberg", separated by the major road 303,lies the mountain
"Ochsenkopf"
(1024m). This mountain is fully developed for tourism. From the south and from
the north a modern cable car leads to the mountain peak.

| The mountain pub with the observation tower "Asenturm" and the "Ochsenkopf" pub in the village Fleckl are owned by the Fichtelgebirge association and invite you to stay. For years the television broadcasting station Ochsenkopf was the most significant receiving station for the western television in the former GDR. During the winter season, the Ochsenkopf area is the most important winter sports centre of Northern Bavaria. Even during the summer, ski-jumping contests take place on a ski-jumping platform covered with mats. | ![]() |

Here,
at the foot of the Ochsenkopf, the rivers Main and Naab have its source, whereas
the river Eger has its source at the “Kalten Buch” in the Schneeberg area.
Due to heavy rainfalls, also some upland moors have developed. Well-known
is the nature reserve “Seelohe” with the lake “Fichtelsee”. The main
villages of the vacation area “Hohes Fichtelgebirge” are Warmensteinach,
Bischofsgrün and Fichtelberg.
